Spring into Summer Festivals

Posted in Events, Music, Outdoors on May 20, 2010 by ponceology

Spring is in the air, and summer’s just around the corner.  Before the heat really sets in, get outside and enjoy some of the festivals that Atlanta has to offer.  Here are a few that are coming up soon:

  • Saturday, May 22 – Draft on Taft and the Atlanta Downtown Festival: Head over to Piedmont Park (by Tenth St. and Charles Allen) for good food, cold beer, live music from Drivin N Cryin and others, and an after-party at Tin Lizzy’s in Midtown.  You’ll have a great time for a great cause – Draft on Taft’s proceeds go to Bert’s Big Adventure.  Feeling more downtown than midtown?  The 9th annual Atlanta Downtown Festival will have a Mediterranean theme this year and is set to include a rooftop tour of downtown and a scavenger hunt where first prize is $500 cash.
  • Memorial Day Weekend, May 29-30 – Decatur Arts Festival and Brew at the Zoo: On the 29th, head down to Grant Park for Brew at the Zoo – more than 30 beer selections, food, live music, and bears!  What’s not to love?  Then spend Sunday strolling around the Decatur Square, where the Decatur Arts Festival will feature an artists’ market, live music and theater performances, and a special kids and teens festival.  Instead of driving, take Marta (it is Smarta, after all) there and check out Brickstore Pub‘s beer selection after the festival!
  • June 5-6 – Virginia-Highland Summerfest: Virginia Ave. is shut down from Ponce Place (at Inman Middle School) to North Highland and a huge artists’ market takes over the Highlands.  There will be two stages for live music and lots of food and drinks, as well as a 5K race on Saturday morning.  And of course, all the shops and restaurants in the neighborhood will be open, so there won’t be any shortage of stuff to do!

Anybody out there know what the word is on East Atlanta’s Corndogorama this year?  Your Ponce-ologists were there last year and enjoyed every hot, greasy, corn-doggy moment of it (who doesn’t love tastings of Firefly Sweet Tea vodka and a $5 t-shirt that says “Chuck Norris invented the corn dog”), and we are distressed by Google’s silence on a 2010 repeat.

We’ll bring you some more activities to keep you occupied and outdoors this summer, but hopefully this list gives you a few things to think about for the next couple of weekends.  Feel free to send us in pictures from any of these – or other – events you go to, and let us know if we left something off the list that should be on.

Happy festing, Atlanta!
